Coffee cake is a type of cake that is typically served with coffee or as a sweet breakfast treat. It is often made with a moist, tender cake base that is flavored with vanilla or cinnamon, and it is topped with a streusel crumble that includes ingredients like brown sugar, cinnamon, and butter. Some variations of the coffee cake may also include fillings, such as fruit jams, nuts, or chocolate chips, that are layered into the cake batter or spread on top of the streusel topping.
Coffee cake is usually baked in a round or rectangular pan and is typically served in slices. It is a versatile dessert that can be enjoyed any time of day, whether as a sweet start to the morning, as a mid-afternoon snack, or as a dessert after dinner. The combination of the tender cake base and the crunchy streusel topping makes the coffee cake a beloved treat for many people.
Tips and Variations
Here are some tips and variations for making a coffee cake:
Streusel Topping: You can customize the streusel topping by using different combinations of ingredients. Try adding chopped nuts, such as pecans or almonds, for added crunch, or use a mixture of cinnamon and brown sugar for a classic flavor.
Fillings: To add some extra flavor to your coffee cake, you can add a layer of fruit preserves, such as raspberry or blueberry, in the middle of the cake. You can also try adding a layer of Nutella or chocolate chips to the cake batter.
Glaze: For an added touch of sweetness, you can drizzle a simple glaze over the top of the coffee cake. Mix together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until you have a smooth consistency.
Spices: To add some extra depth of flavor to your coffee cake, try adding a teaspoon of ground ginger, cardamom, or nutmeg to the cake batter.
Size: If you prefer a smaller cake, you can bake the coffee cake in a 9-inch square pan or a 9-inch round pan. For a larger cake, you can use a 9x13-inch pan.
Flavor Variations: You can also try different flavor variations of coffee cake, such as pumpkin coffee cake, lemon coffee cake, or apple cinnamon coffee cake. Simply add the desired flavor to the cake batter and adjust the streusel topping as needed.
Ingredients:
- 1 and 3/4 cups (220g) all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup (65g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, at room temperature
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup (240ml) buttermilk
- For the streusel topping:
- 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, melted
- 1 and 1/2 cups (195g) all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13-inch baking pan.
Mix the flour, baking soda, salt, baking powder, and cocoa powder in a medium bowl. Set aside.
In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat the sugar and butter together until light and fluffy. Beat well after each addition, one at a time, before adding the eggs. Stir in the vanilla extract.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the buttermilk and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
To make the streusel topping, in a medium bowl, whisk together the sugar, melted butter, flour, cinnamon, and salt.
Spread out the cake batter evenly after adding half of it to the prepared pan. Sprinkle half of the streusel topping over the cake batter. Repeat with the remaining cake batter and streusel topping.
A toothpick put into the center of the cake should come out clean after baking for 35 to 40 minutes. Before serving, let the cake cool for ten minutes.
Enjoy your delicious coffee cake!
