How To Make:

To make crab rice balls, the rice is first cooked and seasoned with a mixture of rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. The crab meat is then mixed with mayonnaise, soy sauce, and other seasonings such as ginger and sesame oil. The rice and crab mixture is then formed into small balls and coated with a layer of nori, which is a type of edible seaweed.

The resulting crab rice balls are not only visually appealing, but they also have a delicious and unique flavor. The combination of the slightly sweet and tangy rice with the savory and slightly spicy crab meat filling creates a complex and satisfying taste experience.

Crab rice balls are often served as a starter or appetizer in Japanese restaurants, but they can also be enjoyed as a snack or light meal on their own. They are a great choice for seafood lovers who want to try something new and flavorful.

Tips:

Use short-grain rice, as it will stick together better when forming the balls.

When handling the rice, wet your hands with water to avoid it sticking.

Use high-quality crab meat for the best flavor.

Experiment with different seasonings such as wasabi, green onions, or even chili flakes for added spice.

Variations:

Try using other types of seafood, such as shrimp or scallops, in place of the crab.

Add some vegetables, such as cucumber or avocado, to the filling for added texture and flavor.

Make the rice balls larger and wrap them in a sheet of nori to make a sushi roll.

Instead of using nori, coat the rice balls in panko breadcrumbs and deep-fry them for a crispy texture.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups short-grain rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 pound cooked crab meat, shredded
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 4 nori seaweed sheets, divided into tiny squares
  • Water for wetting hands

Instructions:

Rinse the rice in a fine mesh strainer and then combine it with 2 cups of water in a medium-sized pot. Bring the mixture to a boil, then turn the heat down to low and secure the lid. Let the rice cook for about 15 minutes, or until all the water has been absorbed.

Combine the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt in a small bowl. Heat the mixture in the microwave for 30 seconds, or until the sugar dissolves. After adding the cooked rice, whisk the mixture together.

In a separate bowl, mix together the shredded crab meat, mayonnaise, soy sauce, ginger, and sesame oil.

Wet your hands with water and then take a small handful of rice and form it into a ball. Make an indentation in the center of the ball with your thumb and fill it with a spoonful of the crab mixture. Close the rice around the filling, using your hands to shape it into a ball.

Take a small square of nori seaweed and wrap it around the rice ball, pressing it gently to make it stick. Repeat with the remaining rice and filling.

Serve the crab rice balls immediately, garnished with additional nori seaweed if desired.
